La Verna, 7th October 2018 – La Verna, defined by Giorgio La Pira as “the springboard for peace actions”, has been the framework for the official launch of the global campaign Leaders for Peace, that on next 10th of December is going to be presented at the United Nations on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights.
The event opened with the summit “Roots and future”, recalling the story and the mission of Rondine through the witnesses of some of its founders: the president Franco Vaccari, the bishop of Grosseto Mons. Rodolfo Cetoloni and Domenico Giani, commander of the Corps of Gendarmerie of Vatican City. Aside them, there was also Felix Stanevskiy, former Russian ambassador in Italy, who supported Rondine in its first steps with its activities of second-track diplomacy.
The core of the event was the announcement of the Appeal for the global campaign, through which Rondine is going to ask the UN Member States to detract a symbolic amount from their defence budget in order to invest it in scholarships for future peace leaders and also to include the human rights education in their national school programs, integrating them with the Rondine Method.
“We need global peace leaders trained with a new method, who are capable of immediately influencing different societies and the world, directing change and propelling us forward into a new era”, read, quoting the Appeal, Manuella Markaj, vice president of the Rondine International Peace Lab, the association reuniting the former students from the Citadel of Peace which is promoting the campaign alongside with Rondine.
