In reality, it cuts through everything: politics, war, security, the way we imagine human beings and the very possibility of living together. Because when we talk about peace, we are not talking only about treaties, borders or diplomacy. We are talking about people’s real lives: homes, schools, families, the places where someone should be able to grow up without wondering every day whether they will still be there tomorrow.

Fear does not arise when peace is truly present. Fear comes when something breaks. When security is shattered. When a threat stops being a word and becomes a sound, a siren, an explosion, a house hit in one’s own neighbourhood. At that moment, fear is not an abstract idea. It is the body reacting. It is a change in breathing. It is the mind running immediately to the people you love.

Anyone who has seen something they believed to be stable collapse knows that afterwards nothing truly returns to the way it was. Even when the noise stops, the wait for the next noise remains. Even when the street seems empty, the question remains: will it happen again? It is natural, deeply human, to want to do everything possible to protect oneself, one’s family, one’s children. No one can ask those living under threat not to be afraid.

But precisely because fear is human, it cannot become the normal condition of human life.

When fear lasts too long, it changes the way people inhabit the world. It narrows the space of freedom. It reduces the ability to choose. It consumes trust. It erodes dignity. It forces people to live constantly on the defensive, as if every gesture had to be measured, every word controlled, every future postponed.

The real challenge, then, is not to deny fear. That would be unjust, even cruel. The real challenge is to recognise a real threat without allowing fear to organise the world. Because defending oneself against a concrete danger is one thing; building an entire political culture on fear, until it becomes habit, language and method, is quite another.

That is why it is right to defend peace for as long as possible. It is right to prevent war before it begins. It is right to seek every space for mediation, every possibility for dialogue, every path capable of avoiding destruction. But peace is not merely the absence of war. It is not the silence of weapons if life remains crushed, humiliated and suspended.

Peace is a difficult and fragile balance between security, dignity and the quality of life. Building it requires strength. Not the strength of threat, not the kind that terrorises the other in order to feel safe. It requires a different kind of strength: the strength needed to make difficult decisions, to remain human when revenge would be easier, to defend life without turning defence into a new form of domination.

At the same time, we must face reality. The world has already been living for some time inside a new phase of conflict. We speak of hybrid war, of economic, informational, technological and energy pressure. These are useful terms for analysing the present. But for many people, war is not hybrid. It is real. It is made of sirens, shelters, destroyed buildings, blackouts, interrupted schooling, separated families and daily grief.

For those living through these wars, the issue is not defending themselves from the ghosts of the past or from abstract threats. It is protecting themselves from concrete, present, visible dangers. That is why every discussion about peace must also begin with them. Not with a comfortable idea of peace observed from a distance, but with the more uncomfortable question: what can we do for those who are already inside war?

If we truly want to build fairer, safer and more sustainable political systems, we must begin with the reality in front of us. Today, one part of the world discusses security and the future, while another part lives in the fire of political, economic and military wars. One part imagines scenarios; the other counts the dead. One part talks about strategies; the other searches for shelter.

Perhaps the point is not to choose between peace and security. The point is to understand that security founded on fear cannot last. It may contain a threat for a time, it may produce obedience, it may create the illusion of control. But it does not build trust. It does not generate justice. It does not heal the wounds from which future conflicts will grow.

From a perspective close to Hannah Arendt’s thought, peace cannot be understood simply as the absence of war. It is, rather, a system of political and human relations capable of making war less and less necessary, less and less probable, less and less acceptable. Not a pause between two forms of violence, but a different order of relations.

To build that order, we must meet halfway. Those living in fear need to be listened to, not judged from afar. Those who call for peace must take concrete responsibility for stopping the wars that exist today, not only for preventing the wars of tomorrow. And those who talk about security must remember that no security is truly such if it forgets the dignity of life.

Only in this way can we stop remaining prisoners of the past. Only in this way can we build a different future: not a future without conflicts, because no human society is free from them, but a future in which conflict does not have to turn each time into destruction.

A future in which security is not born of threat.

A future in which peace is not another name for fear.

A future in which safeguarding life becomes the first political, human and spiritual act.

—

Alena, 26

Born and raised in Saint Petersburg to a Ukrainian family and I study Corporate Communication in Siena.
