The pandemic has acted and will continue to act as an amplifier of pre-existing problems. In a world that seemed initially united in a single global struggle against a virus that goes beyond every human border, we are now witnessing a muddled restart characterized by growing inequalities. Therefore, Rondine students have decided – together with the Association’s main international partners – to extend their international campaign activities for an additional two years, until 2023.
This commitment finds new impetus in the event “TRANSFORMATIVE PEACE EDUCATION AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN A FRAGILE WORLD: TOGETHER TOWARDS 2022 AND 2023” that will be held on December 10th, at 5 PM, broadcast live on Rondine’s Facebook page.
In the historic anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, on December 10th, and exactly three years after the launch of the global Leaders for Peace campaign at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Rondine once again makes its Method and the activism of its young people available to youth-led peace building, at the service of conflicts to be defused.
The event will be an opportunity to give prominence to the twelve proposals emerging from “Our Common Agenda”, the report of the UN Secretary-General published in September 2021. Four proposals fully align with the objectives of the global Leaders for Peace campaign: to actively promote peace and conflict prevention; abide by international law and ensure justice; to treat human rights as a problem-solving tool including rights relating to frontier technologies and internet access; to guarantee centrality to women and girls especially younger girls; to listen to young people and include them in decision-making processes.
For the event will focus specifically on peace, education, and the protection of human rights. Rondine students will devote their stories and aspirations to the revamping of the Leaders for Peace campaign on peace, peace education and human rights towards all international initiatives and events to come in 2022.
In particular, three initiatives announced by Secretary-General Guterres are considered essential and fully in line with the objectives at the heart of the Rondine campaign: the establishment of an Office for Youth and a Special Envoy for Future Generations within the United Nations, an unprecedented “Transforming Education Summit” in 2022 and a “Summit of the Future” in 2023.
In addition to the young people from Rondine promoting the Leaders for Peace campaign, the panel will include H.E. Ambassador Maurizio Massari, Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in New York; H.E. Ambassador Rodrigo A. Carazo, Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations in New York; Marija Vasileva-Blazev, Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General’s Envoy on Youth, Chief of Staff, Office of the Secretary General’s Envoy on Youth; NnaemekaPhil Eke-Okacha, alumnus of Rondine and founder of the ADESSO project in Nigeria; Amina Surkovic, participant to the project “Mediterranean. A Frontier of Peace” and educator at the Research Department of the War Childhood Museum in Bosnia and Herzegovina; Franco Vaccari, President of Rondine Cittadella della Pace.
The event will be moderated by a Senior student of Rondine’s World House international campus.
After having gained the special consultative status at the UN Economic and Social Council in 2021, Rondine has joined the C20 (civil society forum of G20 countries) to encourage governments to rely on multilateralism to resolve conflicts. This approach would add a fourth “P” to the existing three of People, Planet, and Prosperity. It is the “P” of Peace without which not even the other three elements could stand and must be accompanied by the active protection of human rights and the promotion of dialogue as a preventive tool.
Rondine is making room for this new “P”, as well for Projects such as impact projects promoted by Rondine alumni in their own communities at the end of their training. This fourth “P” is meant to put scenarios into practice, to then concretely make them new realities. That is why Rondine students and alumni invite, once again, diplomats and international opinion leaders to discuss the next steps to a peaceful, prosperous and conflict-free future through this online initiative, on 10 December 2021.
